Write Way News & Views

(Written by our Students)

Our primary tutor, and owner of Write Way Tutoring, is
Steve Schroeder. Other tutors, with expertise in specific subjects, are on-call.

Steve’s credentials include:

  1. Twenty years’ experience writing and editing for publications, with thousands of articles to his credit.
  2. Three years as a tutor for the Cape Fear Literacy Council; certified by ProLiteracy America
  3. Extensive experience throughout his career creating written communications and documentation for
business management, in a consultant role or as partner/co-owner of four companies, including two start-ups
  4. A Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism (with Honors), with a minor in Business Administration,
from the University of Wisconsin, Madison
  5. In grade school (so many years ago!), he consistently placed in the 99th percentile in all subjects on end-of-grade tests.
  6. Authorship of an as-yet-unpublished book in the self-improvement genre

Our program also utilizes Steve’s personal library, which underscores his interest in writing (and reading). Reference works in the library include: Inviting School Success (Purkey & Novak), The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, The New Oxford American Dictionary, Roget’s Thesaurus, Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations, Schur’s 2000 Most Challenging and Obscure Words, The Thinker’s Thesaurus (Meltzer), The Mother Tongue — English and How It Got That Way (Bryson), Successful Writing at Work (Kolin), Writing Creative Non-Fiction (Forche & Gerard), The Lively art of Writing ((Payne), The Scott, Foresman Handbook for Writers, The Art of Creative Nonfiction (Gutkind), Grammar Snobs are Great Big Meanies ((Casagrande), Woe Is I (O’Conner), Oxymoronica (Grothe), The Elements of Style (Strunk & White), Warriner’s English Composition and Grammar, Practical Grammar (Pinckert), and The Writer’s Market; In addition, Steve has direct access to a large semi-private library of instructional books and aids covering the full spectrum of school subjects.

When tutoring in reading or writing, one way we enrich the learning experience for our clients is through the use of an Amazon Kindle DX e-book reader. Our Kindle contains hundreds of books representing a broad range of American, English, and Classic literature. As the business grows, we plan to acquire additional e-book readers for clients to use between tutoring sessions.

We use appropriate game-playing to stimulate students’ interest in learning, especially when the material is potentially soporific.

We call our tutoring center “The Think Tank.” It has the informal and comfortable feel of a home rather than a classroom — for good reason, as it is located in the home of our primary tutor, Steve Schroeder. There’s even a mascot: Miss Kitty, a friendly, long-haired Calico (If she knows anything about reflexive pronouns, she’s not saying!). The spacious Think Tank is ideally laid out and equipped for tutoring sessions and is separate from the main part of the residence.
