Headlines like these are all too common:
Nearly two-thirds of N.C. graduates
Must retake basic courses in college
(Associated Press report published in the Star News Jan. 17, 2010, to read more click here.)
Failure rate for AP tests climbing
(From USA Today, Feb. 4, 2010, to read more click here.)
Students failing because of Twitter, texting
(From the Canadian Press wire service, Jan. 31, 2010, to read more click here.)
Don’t let these headlines, and their accompanying stories, describe a member of your family! Write Way Tutoring can help middle school and high school students prepare for the rigors of higher education and the expectations of college instructors — or for a life of continued learning after formal schooling ends.
Many schools today seem to regard their primary mission as teaching students how to take tests. This may be a natural reaction to the fact that teachers, and the schools themselves, are being judged so emphatically on how well their students do on such tests.
But doesn’t this approach miss the point of good education: teaching the skills needed (long after the last test results have been recorded) for success and happiness in life? Of all these skills, capacity for written expression seems to merit the least emphasis in conventional curriculums. At Write Way Tutoring, we try to fill this gap, and others, one student at a time. If the students we tutor also become superior test-takers…well, we appreciate the irony but believe there is more than happenstance involved.
We specialize in teaching:
- Basic, intermediate, or advanced writing (including both practical writing — styled to a specific purpose — and creative writing)
- Organizing thoughts and expressing them clearly; note-taking, outlining, researching the topic
- Reading and comprehending
- Grammar and usage
- Vocabulary building
- Spelling
- Study skills
- Critical thinking
- Subject-specific instruction in English, math, the sciences, computer skills, history, and more
- And…we can guide students toward mastery of specific school homework assignments (the result will be the students’ work, not ours).
- Resume Writing
- Job Interview Skills (including role-playing practice interviews)
One-on-one tutoring gives us flexibility to help a wide range of students, whether they are currently under-performing, average, above average, or super-achievers
